All instructors are CRB checked for working with children and fully insured. We typically hold gradings every three months, but everyone learns at their own pace and there is no pressure to grade.

Minimal Cost

Your first lesson is free. Come along and try us out.
Weekly Training: £5.00 per session.
SKK Membership licence/record book: £25.00 per year.

Style

Our training is based on the traditional Shotokan style, and our emphasis is on the traditional study of the ‘three Ks’ – Kihon, Kata and Kumite.

We also practice "Kobudo" using traditional Okinawan weaponry such as the Bo (a non-tapered, cylindrical staff).

Chief Instructor

Chris Slade - 4th Dan
Sensei Chris began training in 1991 at SEKU Petworth with Gary Chandler. He was graded to Shodan in 1995 by sensei Dave Hazard.
In 2018 he launched Midhurst SKK, now a thriving family dojo, establishing his own Yudansha Kai in 2021.

What We Do

Why Karate?

People of all ages study karate for all sorts of personal reasons.

Self Confidence

Karate involves mastering set sequences and performing these independently. Practitioners grow in self confidence as these moves are mastered over time.

Self Discipline & Focus

Progression in Karate requires focus and self discipline in the dojo. This impacts on other aspects of the karateka's life. For children, it improves concentration in the classroom and helps build decision making skills.

Self Defence Awareness

As a result of practising Karate, practitioners develop a strong sense of physical and mental awareness so that they are mentally alert and are able to make clear decisions for their personal protection in challenging situations should the need arise.

Health & Wellbeing

For adults, the repetition of drills improves the memory and sequencing. Regular stretching and deep breathing exercises improves circulation and general well being. Progressing through the ranks gives most adults a renewed sense of well being and self esteem.
